PRESERVE THE AMAZON OF EUROPE!

We just celebrated 2 years that UNESCO has proclaimed our beautiful Amazon of Europe a 5-country biosphere reserve Mura-Drava-Danube!

The Biosphere reserve stretches across Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary and Serbia, covering 700km of the Mura, Drava and Danube Rivers and a total area of almost 1 million hectares. That makes it the largest riverine protected area in Europe and an international example of the synergy of nature protection, climate resilience and sustainable development.

The area is rich with rare habitats, such as floodplain forests, gravel and sand banks, that are home to the biggest population of the white-tailed eagle in Europe and a breeding site for many endangered bird species, such as sad martin, little tern and black stork. It is also home to otters, beavers and critically endangered sturgeons.

The Mura-Drava-Danube biosphere reserve is crucial not only for many animal species, but also for almost a million people, whose lives and livelihoods depend on it. The intact floodplains help protect communities from floods, ensure clean drinking water supplies and fertile soil, mitigate consequences of the climate crisis, make great zones for recreation and inspiration, and can be a driving force for sustainable development.

We want to make sure the Amazon of Europe is not just another “paper park” - that’s why,  even after more than two decades of our dedicated work on its establishment, we are keeping it in focus in our work.

Your help is important! By making a one-off or monthly donation you can support our work and help us to preserve this riverine treasure.
