The river otter, an extremely shy and solitary animal, is one of the most endangered mammals in Central Europe. Adopt a river otter, and support our work!

Habitat loss due to the regulation of rivers, the construction of dams, hunting and pollution has resulted in a decline in otter populations.

Adopt a river otter, support our work

When you adopt an animal, as in this case, you significantly contribute to our work, and not just to the conservation and protection of rivers. You are helping us in the implementation of other activities that are crucial for the conservation of the free-flowing rivers in our region. We are working on the restoration of rivers, the establishment of natural river dynamics and the protection of the habitats of endangered riverine species. Your symbolic adoption supports our work.

How does it work?

Did you know?

The river otter has extremely well-developed senses, with long whiskers that help in hunting. Its body, with two layers of fur, is built for swimming which makes it an excellent hunter of fish, frogs, crabs and birds. The river otter usually hunts at night, but paw prints in the mud reveal the otter’s presence on a river. An extremely playful animal, the otter will slide on any slippery surface for fun - and also to shorten the way to their destination!

The river otter builds its lair, where one entrance is connected with water, on clam river banks which are overgrown with dense vegetation -– away from people and other animals. It often changes its territory and can cover great distances, even up to 40 kilometres. Being territorial, the construction of more and more dams and other obstacles leads to a reduction in otter numbers. In addition, the number of otters is declining due to river pollution and today they are found only in clean rivers.

Learn more about the river otter

The river otter is considered one of the best swimmers of all land animals. Thanks to its large lungs it can spend up to 4 minutes underwater.

They are strongly territorial and their territory covers large areas. The river otter will change territory because of the density of food available, especially fish.
