An almost extinct shark still lives in the Adriatic! It used to be common in fishing nets and now it is a critically endangered species on the verge of extinction… Adopt an angelshark and support our work!

The angelshark name came due to its wing-shaped fins. Imagine a shark named after an angel, it must be something special, huh? This wonderful animal has almost disappeared from the Adriatic Sea and is forgotten in our collective memory. But it still seems to be there and needs our help.

Adopt an angelshark and support our work

When you symbolically adopt an animal, as in this case, you significantly contribute to our work, and not only to the development of sustainable fisheries, which greatly reduces the number of accidentally caught animals in fishing nets. You are helping to implement other activities crucial for the preservation of our Adriatic Sea!

We are working to establish protected marine areas to ensure that angel sharks and other sharks have a safe place to feed, reproduce and migrate. The presence of this shark leads to new opportunities for the development of sustainable tourism, which can improve living conditions for local communities and provide new business opportunities. By symbolic adoption, you support our work in the field.

How does it work?

Did you know?

Angelshark was thought to have disappeared from our sea. And then three years ago, a young, freshly born shark appeared in a Zagreb fish market. We were thrilled and worried at the same time. We immediately set out to explore how many more angelsharks live in our sea.

The results showed that there is hope that the angelshark, one of the most endangered species of shark, still lives in the Adriatic! This once widespread species, so numerous that even nets were called after it, was reduced to a small part around the Molat Islands in Croatia. Still, there is hope! We all need to do everything we can for angelshark to stay in the Adriatic.

Learn more about the angelshark

This mysterious creature looks like a cross between a shark and a stingray, it can grow up to two and a half meters, and it feeds on fish, crabs and mollusks.

Like other shark species, angel sharks grow slowly, mature late reproductively, and have a small number of young. These characteristics make them even more sensitive than other fish. In addition, the accidental catch presents an additional threat to angel sharks.
