Did you know?
There are more than 20,000 species of bees in the world, and there are about 1,000 in our region. There are only seven species of honey bees, and the rest we call solitary: they do not live in hives but build nests for themselves and their offspring. They are not dangerous to humans, so it is recommended that we plant honey flowers and herbs on our balconies or gardens. We can also build a small hotel out of bamboo or reed for bees to help secure their future.
Bees are considered the most important living beings on the planet because they are the only species that does not carry any type of pathogen - no fungi, no viruses, no bacteria. Despite the belief that the greatest economic value of bees is in the production of honey, the real truth is that their greatest value is in the pollination of plants.

They fly at a speed of around 25km per hour and beat their wings 200 times per second! Beating wings helps them maintain an optimal temperature in their hives too.
Most of the other bees in a hive are female workers. The drones are male. Just a few individuals ever have the chance to mate with a queen.
